Distributed in tropical regions of the Eastern Hemisphere, Taiwan Island, and China.
It grows at altitudes between 150 m and 1,650 m, usually in fields and shaded areas.
Morphology of the plant
Stem
An annual herb with slender stems, 15-60 cm tall, either erect, geniculate at the base, or creeping, with 3-4 nodes and striped.
Leaf
The leaf sheaths envelop the stem, with the ligule consisting of a ring of short hairs; the leaf blades are flat, rough on the upper surface, smooth and hairless on the lower surface.
Flower
The panicle, with branches either solitary or clustered, with very short internodes and long soft hairs in the axils; the branchlets and spikelet stalks have glandular dots. The spikelets are ovate to oblong-ovate.
Fruit
The caryopsis is oblong, deep red, and about 0.05 cm long. The flowering and fruiting period is from April to August.
